Today, we’re diving into the beautiful world of wedding day makeup. It’s one of those magical aspects of your big day that can truly elevate your bridal look. So, I’m here to share 10 valuable tips and current trends to ensure you’re feeling confident and ready to shine on your special day!
10 Tips for Wedding Day Makeup
1. Do a Trial Run
Some brides wonder if it’s worthwhile to invest in a makeup (and/or hair) trial run with your artist/stylist? In my experience as a Dallas wedding photographer, the answer is unequivocally “yes!”
Why? Well, picture this: You have a vision of the perfect bridal look in your mind, but it doesn’t always translate exactly as you imagined. By having a trial run, you can work closely with your artist to fine-tune the details until it’s just right. Or find someone who can better bring your vision to life. Remember, your face and skin tone are unique – and you want to be confident that you’re enhancing your best features!
My suggestion? Coordinate your trial with your engagement session. This way, you can not only perfect your bridal look but also see how it translates on camera – and how it wears throughout the day. If there is anything that needs to be adjusted, you’ll know well before your big event!
2. Consider a Natural Glow
Natural beauty is back in, and that goes for your wedding day makeup too. Consider a dewy, fresh-faced look that enhances your features without feeling too heavy. A lightweight foundation, subtle contouring, blush, and soft eyeshadow can create that effortlessly radiant glow.
3. Lashes, Lashes, Lashes
Lashes will make your eyes pop in photos. You have options here – from natural-looking lash extensions to high-quality falsies. Whichever you choose, make sure they’re comfortable and give your eyes that extra sparkle.
4. Waterproof Everything
Dallas weather can be unpredictable. To ensure your makeup stays flawless, consider waterproof products. This way, you can shed those happy tears or dance the night away without worrying about smudging or streaking.
If you’re concerned about humidity, prepare with a primer or other sweat-proof products to help give you some peace of mind. Or have at the ready some sweat-fighting products (like these oil blotting sheets) so you can control the shine without hurting/removing your makeup in the process!
5. Lips
Your lips will be in the spotlight, especially during the “I do” moment and all those romantic kisses. Choose a lip color that complements your skin tone and is long-lasting. Lip stains or matte lipsticks can be excellent choices. (If choosing matte, be sure to keep some chapstick on hand, as everyone reacts differently to matte lipsticks and we want to keep your lips moisturized on your big day.)
6. Match Makeup To Your Wedding Aesthetic
There are so many cute inspirational photos for wedding day makeup online, but remember that your makeup should match your hairstyle and your dress for a cohesive aesthetic. If you’re going for classic Hollywood in your dress, your look will be much different than if you were going for a natural boho, for example. Try to find a color palette that won’t distract from the rest of your look. But typically stick with something that enhances your natural beauty and isn’t a distraction from you!
7. Touch-Up Essentials
Even with the best makeup, you might need a touch-up during the day. Consider having a mini makeup kit on hand with essentials like blotting papers, chapstick, lipstick, eyeliner or shadow and a small mirror. This ensures you stay fresh and fabulous from the ceremony to the dance floor.
8. Express Yourself
Your wedding day is all about you and your partner. Don’t feel pressured to conform to specific makeup trends or styles. Instead, express your personality and style through your makeup choices. Whether you prefer a classic look or something more avant-garde, embrace what makes you feel your best. This is YOUR wedding day after all.
9. Schedule Extra Time for Makeup
I can not stress this one enough. Do not make the very common mistake of not planning enough time for your wedding day makeup! It almost always takes longer than expected – and for a multitude of different reasons. So, give yourself ample time for your artists/stylists to get everyone done.
To avoid running late, make sure you know the exact number of people getting their makeup (and hair) done beforehand, and consult with your makeup and hair artists on how long of a block you’ll need to serve everyone. 10. Trust Your Beauty Team
Lastly, trust the professionals you’ve chosen for your wedding day makeup and beauty. You chose them for a reason. Share your vision and any concerns during your makeup trial, and allow your makeup artist to work their magic. They’re experts in enhancing your natural beauty and making you feel like the stunning bride you are.
Remember, there are no right or wrong choices when it comes to your wedding day makeup. It’s all about what makes you feel confident, beautiful, and ready to say “I do.” Embrace the process, enjoy every moment, and let your inner radiance shine through.
