Common Things That Go Overlooked On Wedding Days

Your wedding day will be one of the most important and memorable days of your life – but we want it to be memorable for all the right reasons! Today, we’re diving into a topic that tends to sneak up on even the most organized brides—the overlooked gems of your wedding day. These little details often go unnoticed amidst the excitement but trust me, they deserve some serious love and attention.

As a seasoned DFW wedding photographer, I’ve just about seen it all. So, I wanted to share my experience with you in the hopes that you can avoid some of these common mistakes. Ready? Let’s dive right in!

5. The Emergency Kit: Saving Grace in a Sequined Clutch

Ladies, picture this: you’re ready to walk down the aisle, looking like an ethereal goddess, and suddenly, a wardrobe malfunction strikes. Fear not! An emergency kit filled with safety pins, double-sided tape, stain remover, and a mini sewing kit can save the day. And has many times. Trust me, those little lifesavers will keep your wedding moments free of stressful wardrobe hiccups and ensure you’ll get down that aisle tear-free (well, at least the bad kind, heh, cue all the emotional tears!)

4. Deciding Which Knot to Tie – and How to Tie It

Coming in at #4 is a detail often forgotten: ensuring the groom has decided which knot to tie and HOW to tie it! You would not believe the hours I’ve seen wasted googling different knots and looking up YouTube tutorials trying to figure out how to tie the knot last minute. This can be stressful and eat up so much time. Set aside the time in advance to research the knot you want–there are a surprising number of different ones, some much trickier than others. And take the time to practice BEFORE your wedding day.

3. Adding Buffer Time to Your Wedding Day Timeline

While we always hope that everything will run perfectly according to your wedding day timeline; it’s often not the case. Nearly every wedding I’ve had the honor of photographing has had timeline discrepancies in one way or another. Someone is late, something is forgotten, things need fixing or rearranging. There are so many variables with an event of this magnitude that the list of possibilities of how things will actually unfold are endless. Save yourself some headaches by buffering in additional time throughout your day!

2. Lacing Up Your Dress

Tip #2 is something I’ve said before and will emphasize again! You absolutely must try on your dress before your wedding day. Test out that you have all the appropriate undergarments to wear with it – and keep them by your dress so you don’t forget them. Make sure you know how it is going to lace or button up in the back – and that your designated person is trained in how to do it. And feel confident in how to bustle it, if applicable. Bottom line, get familiar and comfortable with your dress in advance!

1. Eating and Hydrating During Wedding Events

Now, let’s talk about the most infamous of all: not eating or hydrating enough on your wedding day. This is a common, yet painful, mistake. Forgetting to eat mixed with the adrenaline of your wedding can really quickly spell a health disaster, not the least of which is fainting!

Plan for success by eating a good breakfast and/or lunch and having easy snacks or finger foods readily available. Some good options are: protein/granola bars, fruit or finger foods/appetizers from your cocktail hour. Drink plenty of water as well! If you’re worried about ruining your makeup – that’s what straws are for. And if you’re worried about having to pee – that’s what friends are for! ;)

You can even capitalize on this idea by creating a bridal oasis, if you will. Amidst the whirlwind of your wedding day, you might enjoy having an excuse to escape to a space of tranquility to relax, get something to eat/drink real quick and recharge before heading back out to your guests.

Take a few minutes alone or with your partner to breathe in the day’s magic before re-embracing the whirlwind and dance floor madness.

I hope these tips will help your wedding day go smoothly. But don’t feel like you have to do everything alone!
