Most of us grew up with Pinterest pages full of beautiful floral dreams for our weddings. However, when it comes time to actually plan it, you may find yourself like me: finding many reasons to not pick a traditional floral arrangement. For instance, not being able to source the flowers you wanted (one of my reasons, since we got married in Jamaica and the selection was smaller), allergies, high costs, or the particular seasonality of your desired flowers could stop you from going the floral route. You may desire a keepsake that’s more long-lasting. Or, maybe you want something more pizazzy to suit your wedding theme. Hence, why so many brides are choosing to go with wedding flower alternatives. Or are incorporating other elements to minimize their florals.
In the hundreds of weddings I’ve attended as a Dallas wedding photographer, I’ve witnessed brides come up with some beautiful wedding flower alternatives. Here are five of the most creative options that could really make your wedding stand out.
Top 5 Wedding Flower Alternatives
Faux Flowers
Faux flowers are used frequently in lieu of real floral arrangements, as they tend to cost slightly less and are much more durable. This option varies significantly in quality, but can make more colorful or exotic-looking floral options available. Plus, a faux flower bouquet makes the perfect long-lasting keepsake from your most important day.
We used this option for all of our wedding florals (bridal bouquet included). And we LOVED the selection and quality of Ling’s Moment.
Feathers
For you boho brides, feathers can be a unique way to replace your florals. I’ve seen gorgeous arrangements of ostrich feathers to decorate tables. As well as peacock feathers and pheasant feathers can be paired with pampas grass for bouquets. Certainly, feathers can be natural or synthetic, and they’ll look perfect in a late summer or autumn wedding.
Balloons
If you’re hoping to add some whimsy to your wedding, balloons can be a fun replacement for floral arrangements. Balloons are often paired with faux greenery to become centerpieces or archways, but can also be filled with glitter or LED lights to give your wedding some enchantment. Balloons are relatively low-cost and can be easily matched to your wedding colors.
This was another alternative we embraced for our own wedding. Likewise, mixing the balloons and faux flowers together made for a really unique and elegant design!
Lanterns or Candles
For elegant and fairytale weddings, lanterns or candles can add that extra sparkle to your wedding. Both candles and lanterns can be brought down the aisle during your ceremony – or used throughout your reception for more ambiance.
Candles come in many beautiful colors, shapes and sizes to match your personal taste. Lanterns are also a lovely option, as they can be lit with a candle traditionally or can be decorated with moss, butterflies, or faux flowers.
Fruit
Fruit is also a fun floral alternative – or addition. Dried citrus acts like stained glass when it is strung together, which can be a beautiful option for nature-focused weddings. In addition, tables can be adorned with decorative bowls of whole fruit and greenery. For the ceremony, bridesmaids may carry small fruit baskets. Peaches, figs, papaya, grapes, oranges, and pears are popular options.
Truly, the sky’s the limit for your wedding! There are so many options for elegant and unique wedding flower alternatives.
