There’s something truly magical about witnessing a love that has endured the test of time. Recently, I had the incredible honor of capturing the celebration of a couple whose love story has spanned five incredible decades.

Debbie and Greg’s 50th wedding anniversary was nothing short of a special and heartfelt celebration. Surrounded by nearly 70 of their closest friends and family, they celebrated 50 beautiful years of marriage with a vow renewal at The Abbey; a charming wedding venue in Justin, Texas, known for its chapel and reception space. This special day was filled with laughter, nostalgia, and love that radiated through every moment. Quite literally. I’ve been a wedding photographer for over a decade… and this was a special one!

When Debbie and Greg decided to renew their vows, they wanted a venue that was local, simple, and intimate, with the timeless charm of a chapel and an adjoining reception space. The Abbey checked all those boxes, and working with Sarah at the venue made the experience even more seamless. Debbie expressed her love for The Abbey, describing it as “a local and quaint country look.” This was the ideal spot to gather the people they have held dear for so many years – creating a setting for both the sacred and the celebratory.

50 Years of Love

Debbie and Greg’s love story began 50 years ago in the spring when they met at a mutual friend’s wedding. (A friend they are still close friends with today and was at their vow renewal!) It was a whirlwind romance, leading to their own wedding just three months later. Not long after, Debbie moved away with Greg, and they began their life together.

When I asked them what they felt attributed to their long and happy marriage, she said that not having had their friends or family around in those early days was huge. It made them learn to truly lean on one another and figure things out as a team, without interference from anyone else, from day one. I thought that was so powerful. And such a beautiful reminder for all newlyweds about the strength that comes from building a foundation of trust and teamwork within one other.

Their journey led them to celebrate this unforgettable milestone of 50 years with a stunning vow renewal at The Abbey in Justin.

The Abbey Vow Renewal Celebration

The ceremony itself was traditional, reflecting Debbie’s desire to mark the occasion in a chapel, making The Abbey a beautiful choice. In their family formals, we captured the playful spirit and unique personalities that make this family and their bond so incredibly unique and special. There was hardly a moment throughout the day without someone cracking a joke or laughing. My cheeks hurt for days after spending the afternoon with them!

Debbie and Greg wanted the evening to feel natural and candid. They wanted it to be focused on spending time reminiscing and celebrating with all their loved ones. It’s rare to see a room filled with so many lifelong friends, a testament to the love and warmth that Debbie and Greg have shared with others over the years. To have a marriage spanning 50 years is an incredible feat in and of itself. But, to also have friends who have walked alongside them all this time, is equally as impressive. It was a truly unique celebration to be part of. And I left feeling so deeply inspired by their life and love story.

Sentimental Vow Renewal Elements

These two incorporated a few very sentimental elements into their vow renewal at The Abbey.

One of my favorite details was that Debbie wore her original wedding veil! And not just any veil, but the veil she handmade 50 years ago. And if that weren’t special enough, she also had her original wedding dress, which she also made by hand, on display at the vow renewal as well. How special is that!?

They also spent months putting together a slideshow that told the story of their 50 years of marriage. A touching tribute to the beautiful life and family they’ve built together.

One of their specific photo requests was to recreate a cherished image from their original wedding day. An image they first recreated at their 25th-anniversary vow renewal in Hawaii. Which was a close-up of their hands adorned with wedding rings next to their wedding cake. So, it was extra special to be able to honor this tradition once again at their 50th celebration. This series of photos symbolizes the enduring commitment they’ve shared across decades.

Debbie and Greg have built a rich life filled with kids, grandkids, and friendships that have stood the test of time. Their lives are so clearly overflowing with love and laughter! And this vow renewal celebration was a beautiful reflection of the legacy they have created.
